Statement from #CLOSErikers Campaign Coordinator Brandon J. Holmes, regarding Mayor de Blasio’s State of the City Address

“Today, the city is closer than ever to a level of decarceration that would make closing Rikers a reality. In his State of the City address, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the average daily population of New York City jails is below 8,000 for the first time since the 1980s. JUSTLEADERSHIPUSA DEMANDS THAT MAYOR DE BLASIO BE ACCOUNTABLE TO IMPACTED COMMUNITIES REGARDING BOROUGH-BASED FACILITIES AND FASTER DECARCERATION IN NEW YORK

“Today’s announcement from the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) is a reminder of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s lack of accountability to and engagement of impacted communities. In leading up to this announcement about borough-based facilities, MOCJ has also refused to increase transparency around his appointed Justice Implementation Task Force which includes advocates partnered with the #CLOSErikers campaign; this has undermined the integrity of that Task Force and of MOCJ’s process to shut down Rikers. Additionally, MOCJ and the Mayor continue to prioritize the design of and programming within new facilities, yet they are not doing all they can to decarcerate New York City.

“Ever since he promised he would close Rikers Island, Mayor Bill de Blasio has ducked away from having real accountability or offering real transparency on this critical issue. The new One Year Progress Report from the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice is a shining example of this basic truth. A graphic set of statistics with […]

Statement From Brandon J. Holmes, #CLOSErikers Campaign Coordinator, on Mayor’s Refusal to #CLOSErikers Before 10 Years

“The de Blasio Administration’s ‘plan’ to decarcerate to 5,000 people in order to close Rikers facilities by 2027 makes it clear that the Mayor remains uninterested in closure in less than 10 years. This is wholly unacceptable given that there is an achievable faster route to close Rikers, and that the longer it stays open, […]

JustLeadershipUSA Responds To New York City Council’s Passage of Intro 741 Statement From Vidal Guzman, #CLOSErikers Community Organizer And Directly Impacted Individual

“When you’re trapped on Rikers Island, the connection you have to your family, lawyer, and community support is crucial. You need that connection for survival on Rikers. You need that connection to maintain some small glimmer of hope in what’s otherwise an oppressive, brutal environment that’s designed to break you down and rob you of […]

STATEMENT FROM BRANDON J. HOLMES, #CLOSERIKERS CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR, ON FEDERAL MONITOR REPORT, INCREASED LEVEL OF VIOLENCE AT RIKERS ISLAND”

“Today, a report published by independent monitor Steve Martin confirmed what we already know — Rikers Island is irredeemable. With brutal tactics that would sound excessive in a war zone, Corrections Officers have proven they cannot be trusted to de-escalate violence, and are often the sole perpetrators of violence in the jail complex. “Only on […]
